Bùth Bharraigh Building
We did it
On 24th February 2023 we successfully raised £6,700 with 115 supporters in 28 days

The aim is to start the process of buying the building we currently rent in Castlebay and prepare to fundraise for the renovation.

We are delighted that we are now able to buy the building we currently rent in Castlebay, Isle of Barra.  The old Co-op building, which we have been operating from for 9 years, will at last be our permanent home.

Bùth Bharraigh is a community shop and hub which sells local products, runs Barra and Vatersay Visitor Information, has free wi-fi and a cafe space from which we run community events.  It is a community wealth-building organisation and runs other initiatives to support the local community.

The premises will be renovated into a sustainable building which meets our needs and will continue to be a central hub in Castlebay for both the community and for visitors to the islands.

We had architect plans drawn up in 2017 and the renovation priced.  However, since then prices have gone up and our needs have changed slightly.  We need our architect to return and revise plans and for the renovation to be repriced.

We have the money to buy the building.  However, we would like to raise some extra to cover the architect, the pricing and conveyancing fees.

Once the building is bought and plans drawn up then we can start our big fundraising appeal for our renovation.

It is exciting and we are extremely pleased about improving this building and to be continuing our work.

Bùth Bharraigh is a social enterprise, established in 2013 and been successfully running for 10 years.  We are a community shop, route to market for local products and visitor information service for Barra and Vatersay.  We are a sustainable business and put £10,000's back into the community each year through producer sales, accommodation finding service and our buying local policy.  We employ 4 full-time staff and currently have 22 volunteers.

We are the 2022 Highlands and Islands Independent Food and Drink Retailer of the year and have won many other awards.
