We aim to improve paths and fencing; to landscape the field; improve accessibility and provide suitable habitat for flora and fauna.
I have been volunteering in the Walled Garden in Barshaw Park with Friends of Barshaw Park for several years.
In 2022, we were thrilled to be chosen by the Royal Horticultral Society to receove funding to create a new Community Garden. work began in the summer of 2022 and was completed by the end of the year.
So this is the first growing season in the Garden. all the raised beds have been adopted by local groups, including a nursery, addiction recovery group, Scouts, Sight Scotland and a local housing association.
The garden is thriving, but we are on a mission to develop the area around it too. previously the area was a field occupied by donkeys, and it the ground is very difficult to cultivate, but our volunteers have planted fruit trees to create a small orchard and we are building a gnome village from logs and also creating a pet memorial garden.
There is much more to be done. There are paths to be laid, a frog pond to be made, a new gate installed to make the area more accessible, and more planting to encourage wildlife.
