We are looking to raise £3000 pounds to make a 15 minute rom-com about a bagel baker struggling to confess his feelings to the girl he loves
Do You Want to Eat the Hole of a Bagel? is a romantic comedy about a baker and a delivery girl who won't admit their feelings for one another until it is almost too late.
The Story:
The story follows Adrien, a meticulous bagel baker in a small Hackney shop, who falls in love with Layla, the delivery girl. Every day, they meet for 5 minutes at 5 AM but that's enough to fall in love. As the familiar ‘ding’ of Layla’s bike rings out, they play out a ritual; she brings him coffee, he gives her a bagel. As this routine plays out over various montaged mornings, their connection grows.
Adrien is initially held back by the emotional baggage of still being hung up on his ex, but after realising that that chapter of his life is over, he confesses his feelings to Layla—only to discover she is moving to New York for an art residency.
At her farewell party, everything seems perfect for a moment, until Layla, who's severely allergic to sesame and gluten goes into anaphylactic shock. Adrien chaotically rushes her home in her cargo bike and after fumbling around with the EpiPen, he saves her and they embrace.
At dawn, Adrien discovers an enormous sculpture in the shape of a bagel, made of all of the bagels he has gifted Layla. She joins him and they share a moment. The story ends with Layla gone to New York, but she’s left behind the sculpture—now proudly displayed in the shop as Adrien opens up to new beginnings. He flips the sign to ‘open’, life rolls on.
A message from our Writer/Director:
My intention for this film is to explore the complexities of love, connection, and relationships in a playful, charming, and funny way. Student films tend to avoid the rom-com genre, and so I want to embrace it deliberately; to take something familiar and make it feel grounded and honest. The approach blends naturalistic performances with moments of gentle stylisation, allowing the humour, awkwardness, and emotional beats to sit side-by-side. I want to treat the small flirtatious gestures; a coffee cup doodle, a perfectly wrapped bagel, a glance held a beat too long, as the real building blocks of intimacy.
I want audiences to relate to the themes of desire and the messiness of timing: liking someone but not knowing how to say it, waiting too long, or saying it too late. The film leans into those almost-moments and missed opportunities, the way attraction grows in gentle routines rather than big declarations. At the same time, I want the film to acknowledge the weight of the past and how connection often emerges in the cracks of unresolved parts of ourselves.
Above all, I want the film to feel warm and human: a story about two people learning to step out of their own rhythms long enough to find each other, if only for a moment. I also wanted to make something unmistakably London-based; a love letter to the early-morning Hackney streets and bagel shops, and as someone who makes bagels myself, this story is deeply personal. In many ways, writing this film helped me process a part of my own life, but the film isn’t about that; it’s about turning something intimate into a story full of warmth, humour and genuine connection.
