The Azaylia Foundation is a registered children’s cancer charity that supports children and families affected by childhood cancer. The Foundation helps families access treatments that would otherwise be unavailable, provides support through complex treatment pathways, and funds research into better treatments and earlier diagnosis.
This prize draw has been created to help raise funds towards Florence’s privately funded DFMO treatment.
Florence was diagnosed shortly after her first birthday with high-risk MYCN-amplified neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. She underwent 18 months of intensive frontline treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, including chemotherapy, major surgery, stem cell transplants, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.
Thankfully, Florence has now completed frontline treatment and her scans are currently stable. She is back at home enjoying life as the happy, cheeky little girl she has fought so hard to be.
Following treatment, Florence was due to begin DFMO (difluoromethylornithine), a maintenance treatment that aims to help reduce the risk of relapse. Sadly, the UK Expanded Access Programme closed just one week before she became eligible, leaving no route for children like Florence to access the treatment through that programme.
Her family are now exploring access through a privately funded Named Patient Programme, subject to approval from Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The estimated cost is around £100,000 over two years.
While DFMO cannot guarantee Florence’s cancer will never return, it represents the opportunity to explore every possible option after everything she has already endured.
