Aim: Julia is torn between putting aside her shame for using her new crutches or leaving her toddler grandson to cry in hunger. Help her decide!
Away in Silence is a short drama film following Julia, an impaired elderly lady, daughter to a coal miner and a housewife. After her daughter leaves Charlie to be taken care of at his grandmother’s, Julia faces a big decision as soon as she accidentally drops her grandson’s only edible food: whether to help her increasingly starving grandson by giving into her shame of using the new crutches to go outside and find food or retain her selfish pride, refusing to aid.
Director/Writer Tomas writes:
The challenge of expressing the first encounter with old age intrigued me. What is to accept when we finally became “old”? What is to accept an extension of us as part of us? It reminded me of the experience of having to wear glasses for the first time. There was this very angry silent feel of rejection against an inanimate object, because in reality what we are up against is the notion that we are not going to be the same anymore and what I wish to capture is this detail: how carrying this great revolt inside of oneself can yet make one feel ashamed of sharing the “problem” with another person, because it’s thought to be irrelevant coming from an object.
To give an object, the crutches, such a human and terrible presence in someone’s life, felt then complex and transversal to human experience in its simplicity.
Consequently, I’m interested in shedding the archetypal elderly character from her kindness and wise image by contrasting those narrative expectations with her last actions which determine her selfishness by letting her sense of comfort overcome saving her grandson’s needs.
