About Us

We are looking to raise money for an independent DIY space in Plymouth, Devon that will function as a pay-what-you-can cafe, bookshop and hopefully a space for creative workshops, events and live music further down the line.

Average Coffee & Books intends to support those within the local community first and foremost. We believe access to a safe space, food and drink are essential and should be available to all. Secondly, we believe in the power of community and solidarity. Average will stand as a place to nurture and foster ideas through means of information and expression. That is, through selling books and running creative workshops and hosting live music.

We're a group of friends who all live in Plymouth and want to strengthen our local community. Currently, our members are active in animal rights, Food Not Bombs, Anti Raids Plymouth and the local music and arts scene. We want to create an accessible space for us and our neighbours to visit, use and enjoy. 

For this Crowdfunder, we’re looking to raise a minimum of £10,000 to allow us to pay 6 months’ rent on a space and get things off the ground. To help us achieve this goal, we are going to be collaborating with artists, coffee roasters, tattoo artists and other like-minded folks to allow those who support us to get something back.  

The most important part of this space will be its function as a pay-what-you-can cafe to feed the people of Plymouth. We also see the space offering a bookshop, a place to browse and support featured work from independent artists and hosting events with a vision of building community through workshops, art and music.

What do you mean by a pay-what-you-can cafe?

We will have suggested prices on our menu. Whether you want to pay more, less or even nothing - is up to you. We want food and drink to be accessible to everyone in our community. 

Why is your target £10,000?

We've been looking at different rent prices within Plymouth and we feel this would be a good amount to secure a space. Any extra that we raise will go towards further rent and additional costs (set up costs, food, equipment etc.)

What happens if you don't raise £10,000?

If we don't reach our target, we will keep the money and do what we can in whatever form or shape that takes. We will also fulfill any items you are owed from the pledges you've made. 

When will I get my stuff?

All pledges will function as a pre-order. We'll be dispatching items once the Crowdfunder ends - whether we reach our total or not. 

Do you offer international shipping?

If you require international shipping, please make sure you select the 'international' version of the item from our tiers. You may be asked to add an additional fee so the item can be shipped to your destination.
