Aim

A Town Explores a Book is St Leonard’s home-grown, community-centred festival, running each year during the school Easter holiday period.

Here we go for A Town Explores a Book 2023!

The ATownExploresABook team has gone from strength to strength since the festival began in 2017. For 2023 we plan bigger, bolder and brighter school projects engaging 2000 children and we need your help.

The book choice for 2023 is Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands, the inspiring autobiography of traveller, business woman and medical practitioner, Mary Seacole. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Hastings Museum and Art Gallery and the Mary Seacole Trust.

The festival marks the 200th anniversary of Mary’s solo journey from Jamaica to London as a young mixed race woman in 1823 as well as the 75th anniversary of the birth of the NHS and the docking of HMT Empire Windrush in 1948.

Mary Seacole is a significant British figure and inspirational role model for young people. She is best known for travelling to The Crimea in the 1850s and establishing "The British Hotel" to supply food and medicines to soldiers during The Crimean War.

Please support exciting creative projects during the spring term for school aged children exploring Mary’s life and work. The artwork will be displayed during the festival from 1st-18th April 2023.

Every penny raised will go towards helping children to discover a new book, explore their responses and create art!

See you at ATownExploresABook in 2023!
