Aim

Production costs for 7 performances of 5-actor play: Patrick Hamilton invites 4 seaside characters from 4 novels to his home on his last day

WHO ARE WE?

Zealous Bee Theatre is made up of multi-national artists: writer-director, technical crew and actors from places as far apart as Wales, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, London and East Sussex. We are coming together with passion and commitment to make possible the presentation, at Brighton Fringe 2026, of Zoé Badovinac's play "As the Winds and Waters Are", inspired by the life of author Patrick Hamilton and four of his novels that have main characters with a strong relationship to the seaside, particularly Hove and Brighton.

The company includes disabled artists. As such, we are committed to promoting accessible venues such as BN1 Arts, where our show will be performed.

WHY MIGHT YOU SUPPORT AND DONATE TO OUR THEATRICAL PROJECT?

If you are stirred to laughter, fury, empathy, delight, horror and sadness by the 20th-century inter-war novels of Sussex native, Patrick Hamilton, and want others to experience or re-experience them too in an unusual and imaginative telling…

If you are fascinated by social and geographical history, particularly by that of coastal Sussex, and see theatre as a vehicle for learning and encouraging people to value and preserve their cultural heritage…

If you see theatre as a crucible for exploring uncomfortable and painful psychological experience and human interaction, an intellectual and emotional challenge that may be enlightening or cathartic…

If you regard the performing arts and those who create and present them as valuable assets to society…

THE ACTORS' SKILL AND DEDICATION:

Each actor is devoting huge amounts of time, energy and travel to “becoming” their character and to creating meaningful and convincing relationships among five protagonists from historical periods spanning 40 years, who will meet for the first and last time in a living-room overlooking The Wash in North Norfolk, as the tide recedes. It is quite a feat collaborating as a team to communicate and respond to so many personal and sometimes conflicting histories, attitudes, moods, personality quirks, expectations and “imagined futures” in such a short space of time (65 minutes) in one, confined domestic space.

COSTUMES:

We have four male actors to dress in early 1920s, late 1930s and early 1960s suits, as well as one female actor to dress in late 1920s style.

SET:

Our set re-creates the small 1950s living room of an alcoholic writer, with furniture and accessories for his creative output, physical comfort in relaxation and self-destructive habit.
