Aim

Help sustain Artichoke as an important community resource by helping us extend and develop a full low waste and vegan kitchen in the shop

  • Artichoke opened in 2020 as a low waste, vegan shop in Sowerby Bridge. Selling amazing  organic fruit and veg, wonderful local bread, a wide range of refillable food, bodycare and household products, a plethora of speciality vegan products, we thought this would be an excellent addition to the High Street in the town.

We had always intended to extend our kitchen facilities so that we could do more outside catering, and have a small number of tables for eating in. This would allow us to open later to extend our customer base,  fill a gap in the market for a place to eat and drink between early afternoon and evening, and also provide a vegan destination, and help us develop specialist stock in areas that are limited elsewhere.

The plan was to grow and adapt the premises to incorporate this as we reinvested in the business. However, we have been hit time and time again with unforeseen obstacles: the repeated issues caused by Covid, the fall-out from a no deal Brexit, war in Ukraine, cost of living crisis, energy bills etc etc  have meant that the modest margins we have for end product sales are under considerable pressure just to sustain the shop, and thus we haven't had the opportunity to grow, sadly.

We still want to go ahead with this model, though, as it is so important for the long term health of the  business and would be a fantastic wholesome addition to the food and drink offerings in the town.

For this reason, we are offering the community to opportunity to help us bring this vision to life. We want you to feel part of our shop, part of our family. We are therefore offering a crowdfunding  membership scheme to help push forward this idea.
