Help us commission some exciting site specific artworks for this year and to create a permanent home for 'Cressida' The Tidal Octopus

Support us and have your part to play in creating an exciting, diverse Art Walk this year.

We bring artists, local communities and audiences together with a 3-day festival of art that celebrates our unique coastal location.

We are specifically looking for help to pay artists to create new site specific works for the Beach, Promenade and High Street areas of Portobello (Edinburgh's seaside) responding to the local landscape. We'd also like to create a permanent home for Lauren Fox's 'Tidal Octopus, Cressida' at the end of Bath Street groyne, a popular sculpture from last year's inaugural Art Walk, which came down as a result of Storm Frank last January.

The 3-day event also includes artists' open studios, popup shows in local shops, and a maker's market at the Dalriada, all arranged around a local walk. Last year more than 2,000 people attended our inaugural event. 

More about 'Cressida'

'Cressida' has been in dry dock since Storm Frank awaiting some repairs. She has had a couple of tentacles replaced, and is waiting attention to damage to another 3 tentacles, and a bump on her head. When she’s all fixed up she will be treated with a marine anti-fouling system which will protect her against the elements for another few years. With the support of ArtWalk Porty and Portobello’s Community Council, she's planning to be ready for re-installing this summer, this time on a long-term basis!

Be a part of making Art Walk Porty 2016 more exciting than ever!

We're looking to commission site specific artists to make some innovative new works for the beach and promenade areas, as well as for St Mark's Church and Porty Light Box at the top of Bellfield Street.

Artists will be invited to make works that reflect upon our local environment, local history, and local communities, presented within a contemporary context.

Many of the works will be on display longer than the 3 day event, depending on location and venue, with  acknowledgement at the site of any supported works.

About the event:

Artist Open Studios

Around 15-20 artists who live and work in Portobello will be opening up their homes and studios to the public. Last year saw more than 200 per day visiting many of the artist studios.

Popup Shows in local Shops and Venues

Last year we saw artists showing their work in local shops, venues and other unique spaces. Juliana Capes' installation of 'Love Letters' was at St Mark's Church, and the community run Porty Light Box housed new work from Mark Timmins. We worked with many other local places putting on local artists' works and are planning to do the same this year. Venues include: The Beach House, The Dalriada, Friday Street Antiques, Breadshare, Velvet Easel Gallery, The Skylark, COVE, St Marks Church, Tribe, Earthy's, The Wild Flower Shop and Faver's Candy.

Maker's Market

The Dalriada will be home to a 3 day market this year, featuring many local designer-makers with their home made wares.
