Our project empowers women through art and therapy to heal from abuse, share their stories, and inspire trauma-informed family court reform.
Many women who have experienced domestic abuse face huge challenges when going through the family courts. Research shows that up to 87% of cases in England and Wales involve domestic abuse (DAC, 2023), yet many survivors feel unheard or dismissed. SafeLives (2021) found that 71% of survivors didn’t get any support in court, and 38% felt professionals were negative or dismissive. The Criminal Justice Joint Inspectorate (2024) calls for women’s voices to be at the heart of reform.
Becoming Arethusa CIC is responding to this. We give women in Devon and Cornwall a safe, creative space to explore their experiences through art therapy guided by the Power Threat Meaning Framework, turning distress into creativity, recovery, and advocacy. Their artwork will be displayed in a two-week exhibition and one-day conference, forming a backdrop for conversations with professionals, policymakers, and the public about the realities of domestic abuse and the family court system.
Funding will be used for art materials), classroom hire, and exhibition and conference costs, including printing, framing, and banners. Participants’ creativity will drive the project, with women shaping the conversation and influencing change. Through art therapy for social justice, these survivors are not just sharing their stories—they are actively helping to transform the criminal justice system and ensure future women are believed, supported, and heard.
