The Cause

Hi, I’m Iona and I'm 30 years old. I am raising urgent funds for fertility treatment after multiple endometriosis surgeries caused my egg count to drop critically low. I only have 6 months to do three rounds of egg freezing.

The surgeries have caused my AMH levels, which measure egg reserve, to drop so low that I am having to do 3 rounds of egg freezing at get the recommended minimum of 15 eggs. This costs an extortionate amount of money, and the NHS will not fund even one round of it. The rules are not kind towards women with endometriosis. I was simply told ‘you need to get pregnant in the next 6 months’.  I went into my operations extremely ill, with the disease taking over my whole body and life. I have not bounced back after the surgery’s over a year ago and now being told this news whilst coming to the doctors to seek help to recover from the operations has been very difficult.

Together people have managed to raise 2 rounds of my egg freezing. I am blown away by everyone’s kindness. I am creating this art prize draw to raise funds towards the final stage.

To help raise the rest of the money, 30 generous artists and makers from across the UK have donated work to an art prize draw, offering a chance to win original pieces while supporting my journey.

My Story

I’m a self employed jeweller and silversmith, and I’ve been living with chronic pain for the past six years.

After years of debilitating symptoms and being passed between doctors without answers, I was finally diagnosed two years ago with Stage 4 Endometriosis. By then, the disease had spread extensively from my lower abdomen to my diaphragm. I had a 10cm endometrioma cyst on my ovary, and my bowels and uterus were fused together, with my bladder also badly affected. The pain was overwhelming, and I experienced repeated hospitalisations that still haunt me.

To remove the endometriosis, I underwent two major surgeries within a few months of each other last year. Recovery has been long and difficult, and I still don’t have the quality of life I had hoped for. It has taken a full year just to regain some independence. Recently, after a change in medication, I’ve started to feel a little stronger. I can stand for longer, begin exercising again, and slowly rebuild my life. But I still live with daily pain and fatigue.

Following recent tests, I’ve been told my AMH levels (which measure egg reserve) have dropped critically low as a result of the surgeries. Before surgery, my level was 11.9 (the average for a 30 year old is around 17). It has now fallen to 2.1.

Doctors have advised that I urgently need to freeze my eggs if I want a chance of having a family in the future.

Because of my low egg reserve, the treatment is more expensive as I need three rounds of egg freezing rather than just one. The medication ranges from £500-£2500, and I am at the highest bracket because I need the strongest medication to encourage my body to create maximum amount of eggs. Each round costs around £7,000, bringing the total to approximately £21,000, an amount I need to raise within the next few months. the NHS will not fund one even round. The rules are not kind to women with endometriosis, even though my doctor wrote an appeal for me, it was rejected. Sadly there are no charities or finical help out there for situations like these.

I am still rebuilding my life after nearly two years of being unable to walk, through physiotherapy, acupuncture, and pain management. I’m working to revive my business, reconnect with friends, and recover from the physical and emotional toll of this experience. Freezing my eggs is my only chance to preserve my fertility. Endometriosis has already taken so much from me, and I don’t want it to take away the possibility of having a family.

To support this, 30 artists and makers across the UK have generously donated unique prizes, including limited edition prints, handcrafted ceramics, sterling silver jewellery, and original paintings. Every piece is one of a kind and part of this fundraising effort.

Every donation, no matter how small, brings me closer to preserving the possibility of a future family and reclaiming hope after years of battling endometriosis.

Thank you so much for your support, and to the incredible artists, friends, and family who are helping me through this.
