Aim
We require £500 to help fund a community-centred archaeological project at Windmill House, Boroughbridge
Earlier this year the Thornborough Archaeology Group launched its first community-centred fieldwork across the Ure-Swale Catchment of North Yorkshire. We had a day of fieldwalking near the Hutton Moor henge and two days of test-pitting at Windmill House. These events only happened thanks to all the generous donations made to a previous JustGiving Campaign. They made it possible to purchase essential consumables and items connected to surveying and recording.
Both events were very well attended and produced good archaeological results. So much so that we will be returning to Windmill House on the 23rd and 24th August 2025 to expand two of the test-pits, revealing what we hope will be prehistoric features. These can then be excavated, offering our volunteers the chance to build on their earlier experience of field archaeology and develop more advanced excavation and recording skills. It should be an exciting and hugely rewarding opportunity.
The event is free to attend, but will nonetheless cost us money. As the Thornborough Archaeology Group is a new organisation, our biggest single challenge is getting together the necessary excavation equipment for the volunteers. We are therefore launching another JustGiving Campaign to raise £250 for the purchase of the following:
5” handled pointing trowels (x10)
Hand shovels (x10)
Plastic buckets (x10)
Kneeling pads (x10)
Hand brushes (x4)
Fine mesh sieves (x5)
These items are all essential to excavation, and will be used not just at Windmill House, but for all our future projects. More will be needed as our projects get bigger, but the above represents a very solid start to developing our own inventory of equipment.
