Aim

Quite simply we want to record our first ever CD "Music of the Plantagenets" - English and French music of the 12th and 14th centuries.

I started Archaedium nearly 2 years ago as I got sucked into the fascinating world of Medieval music. The music of the Medieval period is strikingly different to all Western Art Music since. The harmonies and rhythms evoke a totally different world and to me, recreating this music feels as close to time travel as it's possible to get.

For the past 2 years we have performed at Medieval Music in the Dales on the open stages, and have had such positive feedback that we feel now is the time to record our first CD and really start to take Archaedium places! (The video link is a clip from one of our performances at MMitD in 2018. My DSLR doesn't really do the music justice, but hopefully it gives you all an idea of our sound and style.)

For our first recording project I've put together a programme of music from England and France during the height of Plantagenet rule, the 12th and 14th centuries. The music is a mix of sacred and secular pieces that we perform on a variety of instruments and voices. Medieval music was rarely written for specific instruments, so as performers we have to make our own interpretation and realisation of each piece. That's my job in the group and I love unearthing new tunes and playing around with arrangements to bring the music to life.

Our ensemble is comprised of 4 regular members:

Mary Mohan (me) on bowed strings, recorders and voice

Rose Lawrence on recorders and voice

Rachel Williams on bowed strings

Catherine Mohan on percussion and harp

The two younger members of the group, Rose and Rachel, are still at university and are both very accomplished young musicians.

If you are able to support our venture it will be a really exciting project for all of us. Hopefully the first of many more to come!
