A drop-in community apothecary delivering professional holistic healthcare as well as a multidisciplinary clinic of healthcare practitioners
Who am I; I’m Ruthie, a mother, a Cornish bird and Penzance-born Medical Herbalist! For over 13 years I’ve worked with people from all walks of life, helping them find balance and wellbeing through the power of plants - from simple ailments to complex, long-term health conditions. Alongside my clinical work, I also run community workshops and educational talks - sharing the beauty and science of herbs.
· Apothecary Shop ·
It has been a long held vision to open an inclusive, community apothecary in the heart of Penzance - where I can deliver my work to support community health from the high street. It has been over 85 years since Penzance has had a herbalist shop!
My passion is to bring empowerment to the community, offering a resource to support a struggling healthcare system whilst creating a meaningful, wellbeing space, where people can gather, connect, share ideas, discover ways to feel better in a welcoming, inclusive, high vibe sober space to sit and drink chai, cacao super smoothies and belong.
This new space will be home to many beautiful offerings, professional drop in health advice, a herbal dispensary for all your needs, herbalism courses, workshops, talks and other inspiring talks and workshops from wellbeing practitioners within the community.
The Apothecary will bring the wilderness into the heart of Penzance - reconnecting people with nature through locally foraged botanicals, community medicine-making, and education in sustainable health practices. By transforming a heritage high street space into a living, sensory space filled with plants, learning, and connection, the project creates a bridge between urban life and the natural world.
It will also be a space to host the vibrant community of wellness practitioners to deliver their services and offer talks and workshops on all things wellness, holism and health and much more!
· Sustainability - a pledge to the planet ·
Community herbalism offers a model of healthcare with a significantly lower environmental impact, particularly when the supply chain is kept local. By using native, abundant plants and fungi, it creates a circular, sustainable system. When practiced consciously, herbalism strengthens both human and environmental resilience - becoming part of the wider solution for climate sustainability. Working alongside modern medicine, herbalism provides a natural and complementary pathway within a truly integrated approach to health.
One of the great strengths of community herbalism is its preventative focus -supporting wellbeing and helping to reduce the onset of long-term illness. Unlike mainstream healthcare, herbalism honours the whole person and the wider ecosystem.
Sustainability is guiding every decision for my business model. This commitment stems from a lifelong concern for the environment and a desire to transform climate awareness into meaningful action. Through this work, the Apothecary will reconnect people with nature, promote responsible resource use, and model sustainable healthcare at a community level. By bringing herbalism back into the community, this project contributes to climate resilience while alleviating pressure on overstretched local health services.
· Offerings to the community ·
This new walk-in apothecary will offer traditional, personalised, science-led natural interventions, a wide range of quality medicinal plant extracts and a small selection of locally produced apothecary-wares for your daily rituals. This project also endeavours to provide a much needed multi-disciplinary practice space for wellness practitioners, a small platform for artisan makers and also a student clinic for trainee herbalists fulfilling clinical hours.
The small adjoining practice room will be open to health and wellness practitioners in the community - including therapists/ counsellors; massage therapists, cranio-sacral and much more.
My vision now is to reach as many people as possible, offering an over-the-counter service to treat acute illness whilst also continuing to expand my offering to support those with ongoing or chronic illness through an integrated approach with nutrition and herbal medicine.
· Why we need help ·
This project is completely grassroots, meaning we are beginning from scratch. To enable the widest possible outreach for our services we need to establish the infrastructure for a beautiful and functional space, including; equipment for workshops, fitting out the apothecary and practice room, initial cost of setting up the contract and other associated start up costs.
We ask for as much support as possible from our community to help us bring this valuable resource to the Cornish community. Thank you so much, we look forward to welcoming you and sharing all the gifts of our high-street apothecary and healthcare hub!
