We hope to get a copy of this inspiring, positive and practical book into the hands of as many young people across Scotland as possible.
'I wish this book had been around when I was a kid. . . Unlearning white supremacy is an important first step to dismantling it - Layla makes that journey so much easier and more accessible. If every child read it, the world would be transformed. This book will make the world a much better place for all of us' - Mikaela Loach, climate activist & co-host of The Yikes Podcast
We can all help change the world.
"Action starts with us, the young people of Scotland. We need the tools and resources to succeed and we are the ones who can and will stand up to racism." - Lana Abbas, 2019 IYS study of student experiences of racism in Scotland.
The prevailing narrative around racism in Scotland is that there is 'no problem here'. And yet we know that is far from the truth; racism is a blight on the mental health and wellbeing of thousands of students across the nation, and the latest government statistics showed racially aggravated offences in Scotland actually increased by 6% in 2020/21.
If we are to build a fairer, more inclusive Scotland for all, we must move away from denial and learn how to understand, navigate, and dismantle the oppressive structures of white supremacy.
Part of empowering everyone - and especially young people - in Scotland to change the narrative around race and racism is to provide tangible resources to do so.
We believe that diversifying school libraries is a crucial part of this work, and getting every Scottish Secondary School a copy of Me & White Supremacy is a terrific place to start and open-up new conversations.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Addressing younger readers of all races this book discusses topics like white privilege, racist stereotypes, cultural appropriation and more, so that everyone can understand race and racism. It isn't just a book you read, it is a book you do - full of questions, provocations and guided exercises.
'Full of knowledge, cultural reference points and practical guidance, I will absolutely be referring to this in my own anti-racism journey and encourage others to do so too' - Jeffrey Boakye
