About the project
They are the 99%. Join filmmaker Patrick Ireland as he tumbles down the rabbit hole, penetrating the very core of Anonymous in the build-up
OverviewWith civil unrest rising around the globe and the western economies struggling to recover from the 2008 financial crash, politics is rapidly changing. The internet has given birth to a new kind of political activists, united not by geographical locations, but by common goals. ‘Anonymous’, fashioned after Guy Fawkes and Alan Moore’s landmark graphic novel ‘V for Vendetta’, are perhaps the most intriguing and radical of this new breed of activists. There’s one solution for Anonymous; and that’s revolution. The 5th of November’s Million Mask March is a momentous political event and the most important date in Anonymous’ calendar. The March links over 400 cities across the world in global protest; the kind of which human kind has rarely seen before. On the 5th of November 2014 we there to capture the drama with our cameras…
What’s it About ?ANONYMOUS: A MILLION MEN offers audiences a broad (and somewhat brief) introduction to Anonymous as a political movement. Who are they? What do they represent? Why have they become so popular? These are the key questions we pose in the film. The narrative ultimately builds towards Anonymous’ ‘Million Mask March’ on November 5th as thousands of masked activists take to the streets of Central London in mass protest. Join award-winning filmmaker Patrick Ireland as he meets the very heart of the movement, attempting to understand why so many ordinary people have lost their faith in mainstream politics and taken to the streets in protest as an alternative. Interviews in the film range from comedian-turned-revolutionary Russell Brand, Conservative MP Chloe Smith and the very organisers of the Million Mask March itself; the ‘Anon hardcore’.
Why Now ?With the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, movements like Occupy and The People’s Assembly have risen to prominence as well as UKIP and The Greens breaking into the political mainstream. The two-party system is under fire. Democracy is changing. We at SHOUT OUT UK strongly believe that political discourse and different styles of activism are important to document now more than ever. We are on the precipice of political change. What will happen is unclear, but change is coming.
