Trans healthcare in the UK is broken, and people of all ages are suffering. Please help us provide life-saving care to those who need it
This Christmas, we’re inviting you to give a gift that can not only change, but also save lives.
As we gather with loved ones, exchange gifts and celebrate the festive season, it’s worth remembering that not everyone feels safe or seen. Gender-affirming care is lifesaving care. For many, it offers relief from years of distress, it improves mental health, supports physical wellbeing and helps trans+ people participate in public life as their true selves.
Across the UK, thousands of trans+ people are facing extraordinary barriers preventing them from being able to access the vital healthcare they need to live authentically and feel comfortable within themselves.
Some of these barriers include:
- Years-long NHS waitlists.
- Some trans+ people in Scotland could wait up to 224 years for their first NHS gender clinic appointment.
- As of 2025, an estimated 48,000 people are waiting for a first appointment at one of the 15 UK gender identity clinics.
- GPs are reluctant to support shared care with NHS or private providers.
- GPs withdrawing care after, in some cases, years of HRT prescribing.
- Paid for private care, which is out of reach for many.
- Over 86% of trans people have said that NHS waiting times have negatively impacted their mental health.
- People are forced into self-medicating without proper oversight.
This year, it was reported that the estimated average wait time for a first appointment at a UK gender identity clinic is currently 25 years.
Trans+ people are being failed by an outdated healthcare system that is oversubscribed, underfunded and under-resourced.
