Aim

Please support my campaign to become Labour Member of Parliament for Lanark and Hamilton East

I was born and raised in Lanark in the 1980s, and witnessed first-hand the difference that a Labour Government can make to communities throughout the West of Scotland – and the damage that can be inflicted by the Tories.

I have been incredibly fortunate to have opportunities in life, and in 2004 became the first person from my High School to be accepted to study an undergraduate degree at Oxford University.  I relished that experience, and the subsequent opportunity to study a masters in international law and human rights at New York University.

But I have never lost sight of where I came from, and the values that my parents and grandparents instilled in me – compassion, decency and solidarity.

Andrew in Lanark

I am a passionate advocate for human rights and social justice.  In 2009, as a volunteer for the charity Reprieve in Louisiana, I worked with attorneys and investigators in representing impoverished defendants in death penalty cases.

As Director of Research and Secretary to the Global Citizenship Commission, I authored a report assessing what needs to be done in the 21st Century to fulfil the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was published and presented to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in April 2016.

And for the past year I have worked with the UN in developing a plan for increased investment in global education, in order to develop the potential of all the world's young people.

I joined the Labour Party in the run up to the 2010 General Election because I realised that we could not take progress for granted.  It was for that same reason that in 2013 I quit my job as a lawyer in New York to return home to work for Gordon Brown, making the progressive case for Scotland’s place in the United Kingdom in the independence referendum.  Although my studies and work have often taken me away from home, I have always maintained strong ties with the Lanark and Hamilton East constituency - a community that has been home to generations of my family, and where my father runs his local law practice today.

At this election, Labour values are once again at stake – threatened by a Conservative Party intent on driving through a hard Brexit and doubling down on austerity, and a Scottish Nationalist Party that will always place their pursuit of independence above the needs and aspirations of the people of Scotland.

I am standing as the Labour candidate for Lanark and Hamilton East because I believe there is a better way forward for Scotland.  A vote for Labour on June 8 will deliver more powers for the Scottish Parliament and enable us to maintain close ties with the European Union, while protecting Scotland’s place in the United Kingdom.

This vision of Scotland’s future – rather than the extremes put forward by the Tories and the SNP - is the best route to create high quality jobs, fund public services and tackle poverty.

I believe I have the skills and experience to serve as a champion for the people of Lanark and Hamilton East.  If elected, I will fight tirelessly to defend Labour values and advance the cause of social justice in the constituency and across the country.
