To attend the SPACE-EARTH-SPACE residency at the BioArt Society in Kilpisjärvi, Finland. To take analogue photographs of the stars.

From the 15-22nd September 2019, I will be attending the SPACE-EARTH-SPACE residency at the Bio-Art Society in Kilpisjärvi, Finland. The Space-Earth-Space group will explore the tangible and conceptual connections and exchanges between Space and Earth in the realms of the physical, the informatic, the phenomenological and the material. How can the theatre of space performance inform our explorations of the Earth? How can we use the Earth to simulate an experience of space? What change in significance happens when something comes from or returns from space? In a series of readings, discussions, observations, and situated experiments we are interested in what kind of material is being exchanged between Earth and Space and how to devise methods on how to track, record or visualise such material and the process of exchange. We are searching for marks which the space environment leaves on the terrestrial environment and look into ways how the terrestrial environment around Kilpisjärvi can be used as a space analog.
Here I intend to capture analogue photographs of the stars and aurora borealis, to develop my project "Ancient Light". Through the production of this series of photographs, I consider how light from incredibly distant stars can be captured directly onto photosensitive film. To do this I will be using a range of films, including high ISO films such as Ilford Delta 3200. These film photographs will then be used to produce high quality darkroom prints. During this residency, I would like to experiment with large format film photography, and colour photography. I would also like to experiment further with caffenol-c developer.
Work resulting from this residency will contribute to my practice-based research degree at the Royal College of Art.
Why am I asking for your money?
I am looking to raise money for the production of artworks resulting from the residency and associated travel costs. I currently self fund my practice-based research degree, and all related projects. I am in receipt of no public funding for this venture.
Put simply, the more money I am able to raise from this crowdfunded page, the better quality of work I will be able to produce.
Rewards
For this project, I have produced a small publication of photographs from my "Ancient Light" series of photographs. This publication is A5, Short Edge Bound, 40 pages, Perfect Bound, and printed on uncoated paper with a matte finish. The page design was created by Emma Falconer.

You can view a digital version of the publication on ISSUU.
I will be selling these for £12 each.
I also hope to raise funds mainly through the sale of existing prints and a dedicated event in my studio.
