A bit about us...
Port Bannatyne has a proud history; many people remember the four thriving pubs and numerous shops that once lined Marine Road. Now, as the community faces its second winter of dark windows and closed doors, we have a fantastic opportunity to secure a pub and hub at the heart of the village that can serve the needs of the community long into the future.
A group of residents came together in January 2021 and formed Port Bannatyne Development Trust with the aim of re-opening one of the village pubs. After consultations with the local community it was agreed that we would go ahead and raise funds for a community purchase of the Anchor Tavern with the goal of transforming it into a pub-hub.
We have had an offer accepted to purchase the Anchor Tavern, including the former off-licence at No. 34 and a small future garden area to the rear. Our plan with your help is to get it back open in Spring 2022.
Our goal
For locals, visitors, and sailors alike the Anchor Tavern pub and hub will be a cosy place for people to gather, have a blether, listen to music, or play a game of darts, throughout the year. For visitors it will be a place to get a drink after a walk from Rothesay or perhaps after finishing the West Island Way. And for sailors, a place to dry out and meet the locals. Whoever you are you will be assured a warm welcome in the Anchor Tavern and we look forward to seeing you very soon.
How much money do we need?
After a lot of number crunching, discussions with surveyors and contractors it was determined that we would need to raise a minimum of £50,000 to make the business viable and a maximum target of £105,000 to enable a more complete renovation and include some of the nice to haves - who doesn't want a nice toasty wood-burner to warm their hands on in the winter!
Our fundraising journey
In September 2021 we were successful in our grant application to the Scottish Land Fund for funding to purchase the Anchor Tavern.
In November 2021 we launched a community share offer. Thanks to the generosity of the local and wider community we have raised £92,385 that will go towards the renovation of the Anchor Tavern. This is fantastic progress and to help us further we are using this Crowdfunder appeal to raise £16,000.
Why donate?
By donating you will enable us to make the Anchor Tavern just that bit more special, for example:
- Making better access between the bar area and the hub space at No. 34 (what was the old off-sales area)
- Improving the toilet facilities
- Landscaping the garden area to the rear of the pub-hub
- Installing a wood-burning stove to keep us warm in the winter months
We're nearly there! And we hope that you will be able to help us finalise this journey to bring the Anchor Tavern into community ownership for Port Bannatyne.
We made it to the news!
