The village of Amulree is nestled at the start of Strathbraan and Glen Quaich in a very rural, some say isolated, but accessible location. Its inhabitants are a varied lot and spread out over a number of miles of the beautiful highland Perthshire scenery. Strathbraan runs the length of the River Braan which itself is fuelled by the nearby Loch Freuchie and served by a village hall that acts as a social hub to the wider area. It’s been in existence since 1954 and is used for a variety of social functions. Like many of us at that age it’s undergone some cosmetic enhancements through the years, but the good folk of Amulree want to further enhance what we have and create a viable, dynamic social hub which caters for the needs of locals in the region and the many tourists that visit the area throughout the year. From walkers, cyclists, fishing folk, canoeists, bikers, car clubs, etc., all enjoy the wonderful scenery we have on hand
We’re about to start on our venture and will be looking for help with raising funds to realise this objective. We plan to start by embarking on a crowdfunding scheme along with other innovative ideas. We’d appreciate all the help we can get and in any form. One thing you can be assured of is a warm welcome in a beautiful part of highland Perthshire.
What we want to do is to provide a facility to show off what we have to offer. The current space boasts Perthshire’s finest dance floor, stage, a small meeting room currently being used for storage, a couple of toilets and a small kitchen. In addition, as a community we have a growing collection of assets that benefit the community due to many successful and well supported fundraising activities, however, due to the lack of facilities at the hall these assets are spread around the community in various attics and sheds.
The new facility will have a larger kitchen kitted out to catering standards complete with serving hatch into a large coffee area with large windows taking in the beautiful scenery. There will also be a small meeting room which will double as a community co-working space, a valuable asset to the community given these post-pandemic times. The sought-after dance floor and stage will get some TLC with additional storage added to the side of this where we can gather in our assets to be housed in one place. The toilet facilities will also be getting re-vamped with additional toilets being added including state of the art disabled access. Externally we will be installing an electric vehicle charging point, a hook up for motorhomes, bike racks and seating to facilitate the enjoyment of the natural environment. In addition to all these fantastic facilities the plan is to install an audio-visual system and sound panels to bring the hall fully into the modern world and make it an even more desirable place to host events of all kinds. The sound panels will also aid those with hearing impairments get the most out of the facilities. Environmentally, we already have a range of solar panels and we would hope to extend these further. This will be complimented by installing a carbon wall to store the electricity being generated until it’s use is required. We will also be changing the heating system to a more economical air-source heating system. If funding allows, we hope to put in a small amount of external play equipment for the children to enjoy.
