Living near Totnes, I regularly enjoy spending time on, in, or next to the beautiful and iconic River Dart.
Sadly though, like every UK river, there has been a drastic decline in water quality in recent years, making people sick, and having a negative impact on river wildlife.
When I heard about the brilliant grassroots group, Friends of the Dart, and all the positive and impactful work their team of volunteers are doing to improve the situation in the longterm, I really wanted to help.
They have organised a Canoe Challenge for fellow river lovers to raise funds to contribute toward their Crowdfunder that will enable them to continue their vital work.
On the evening of Friday 4th October we will canoe the River Dart tidal section Stoke Gabriel to Tuckenhay and back (approx. 3 miles each way).
I have never done a long canoe like this before, in the dark, so the challenge is a little daunting, but exciting too (I think!)
We will paddle through shallow sections and currents; past bigger boats, mudflats, and oyster beds, and in whatever weather conditions are thrown at us (although it would be cancelled in the case of extremely adverse weather).
The outward journey will be in daylight but the return journey will be in the dark, so any motivational support or donations you can offer, would be hugely appreciated!
The paddle route is stunning, from Stoke Gabriel up Bow Creek to the village of Tuckenhay and the fantastic Maltsters Arms right by the river.
If you'd like to join too, contact the organiser [email protected] and set up a fundraiser page like this to help the cause.
Otherwise I'd be very grateful for any donations to my fundraiser to help spur me on when the going gets tough on the night! 🚣
Huge thanks
