Help fund a headstone to mark the grave of one of Galashiels' most famous figures.

Robert Coltart, former weaver turned confectioner of Gala, known as the author of what is perhaps the world’s first advertising jingle "Coulter's Candy" also known as “Ally Bally Bee”, is laid to rest in an unmarked grave in Eastlands Cemetery, Galashiels.

This colourful local legend's Galashiels connection is celebrated with statues of Robert Coltart selling his famous “Coulter’s Candy” along with Little Jock and Wee Jeannie, whose names are lifted form verses of the lullaby, at Galashiels’ Market Square, but his grave remains unmarked.

This fundraiser will help purchase and install a headstone at the grave in Eastlands Cemetery, in recognition of the significant cultural impact of this former Galashiels resident.

This project is led by Galashiels and District Councillor Fay Sinclair, Christine Grahame MSP and local historian Graeme McIver, and is backed by local funeral directors, A & A Doyle.

Any excess funds raised will be used to set up a charity with the aim of establishing a local exhibition/museum dedicated to Robert Coltart.
