I'm raising money to contribute to UNICEF's aim of vaccinating 2 billion people against COVID-19 - because no-one is safe until everyone is!
Soon after the start of the first Covid lockdown in the UK, I picked up a running injury to my foot. So while everyone else seemed to be taking up running, I was finding even walking could be painful and running was out of the question. Several physio sessions later, by mid-July I was finally able to take the first tentative steps to running again. In early August I set myself a new running goal: no longer aiming for a sub-50 minutes 10k, my goal now was simply to remain injury-free for 12 months. This meant taking baby steps: increasing my running very gently and slowly, ensuring I rested lots and kept up pilates, strength and cross training.
Now, finally, I am back to putting in some real miles and feeling ready to take on a half marathon. Patience and commitment has led me to this point. And I feel a real freedom as I am back to being able to run and explore the world around me.
That sense of freedom is bolstered by the knowledge that I'm lucky enough to have stayed fit and healthy, and I have now had a Covid vaccine, and so have almost all my close friends and family. That sense of freedom and hope for the future needs to be shared with the whole world and so that's why I'm using this challenge to raise some money for Vaccinaid, to help UNICEF reach its goal of delivering 2 billion vaccines and millions of treatments.
11 July, when I'll be running Leamington half marathon, all being well I will have hit my goal of 12 months running injury free. Please sponsor me and help me reach my fundraising goal as well.
