AfriFest Weston is a free family event that celebrates African/Caribbean culture as part of the rich ethnic diversity of our community
AfriFest Weston began in 2025 as a grassroots initiative in direct response to needs expressed by African and Caribbean residents in Weston-Super-Mare, who reported a lack of belonging and connection within the local community. Residents described feelings of isolation, loneliness and limited opportunities to build relationships beyond work and home life. Families with young children shared that their children spent most of their time indoors, with few chances to socialise or access local provision. AfriFest Weston is a community-led initiative, created by the community for the community in response to these needs.
AfriFest Weston provides a vital, positive and visible space for belonging, safety and unity when the community needs it most.
The first festival in 2025 was delivered entirely through local goodwill, with no funding investment. This crowdfunding would be transformative, enabling the programme to grow, artists to be paid fairly, and the festival’s impact to deepen. AfriFest Weston was born to connect people, celebrate heritage, and build a stronger sense of belonging. With funding, it will continue to provide a welcoming, joyful space where African and Caribbean communities feel recognised, valued, and proud of their culture, while creating opportunities for the wider community to learn, connect, and celebrate together. The festival strengthens social connections, reduces isolation, and encourages trust and engagement with other local organisations. Held in Weston-Super-Mare's Italian Gardens, AfriFest Weston increases visibility, challenges negative narratives, and builds pride and cohesion across communities. It also benefits the town by boosting local business and promoting a positive profile.
