Helping children off the streets and into school gives them a chance to improve their lives and build a better future.
African Children’s Fund was founded in 2006 to support local initiatives benefiting disadvantaged children. The projects we support are run by local staff who are committed to - and know the needs of - their own communities.
Kenyan Porridge Clubs
The biggest programme we support is a Porridge Clubs scheme in Kenya which now operates in 10 primary schools in and around the town of Thika. The Porridge Clubs enable over 2,000 children to go to school every day rather than working, scavenging or begging on the streets, by providing a mug of nutritious porridge during the morning break.
Each mug of porridge costs just 9p and the Porridge Clubs have led to a reduction in school absenteeism, an increase in enrolment and improvements in both academic and sporting attainment.
Education All Month, Every Month
In 2012, we expanded on the Porridge Clubs programme by addressing the need for sanitary towels and underwear for girls who were historically missing one week in four of their schooling while menstruating, as a result of inadequate sanitary protection.
This programme - which is coupled with a monthly education forum - now supports over 1,200 girls each year in Kenya and Tanzania.
A wider impact
Other local initiatives we support include the installation of boreholes and toilet facilities in schools in Kenya; a nursery school in Tanzania; legal aid for children and families in Kenya and Tanzania; the provision of educational resources and counselling for children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe; and a safe house for abused and neglected children in Uganda.
