Hinckley, once famous for stocking manufacture, has changed from being a prosperous town to a characterless community. We are a group of residents  wanting to enhance our community with no financial support other than personal contributions.

The statue will give the town a new identity by taking advantage of our heritage - the childhood hometown of Ada Lovelace, internationally known and the first person to foresee computerisation and write the first computer programme in the 19th century.

The project will support local schools in encouraging girls as well as boys to consider STEM subjects as career choices, especially as we have a technology park within the Borough wanting to recruit locally. It will encourage interest in local heritage, tourism and introduce a cultural element to the town in the form of  a statue created by an eminent sculptors, standing outside our local college.

Half the necessary funds have been raised. The statue is being cast and the Portland stone ordered. Planning permission, recommended for approval, is to be considered early September and a builder is on hand to fabricate the foundations.

Recent research in the Lovelace papers has led to the discovery that Ada loved Hinckley. She was enchanted with its charms…the hustle and bustle of the market place, with the comings and goings of the stagecoaches, the markets and fairs and the travelling players. The aristocratic patients arriving to see the celebrated Dr. Chessher was the type of company her family were familiar with. It all added up to the rich tapestry of Ada’s childhood. Ada Lovelace “loved Hinckley!”.
