Growing up in inner-city areas like Hackney, East London, young people often face discrimination, harassment, and abuse from the police. But not all are impacted equally; those facing other forms of oppression bear the brunt of police injustice.
That's why our project supports and empowers those most affected by policing interventions.
We provide healing spaces, legal advice, and education, while conducting research and advocating for change. The group also supports young people to participate in broader social movements to challenge, scrutinise, dismantle, and replace systems of racist and unjust policing.
Some of the ways in which Account does this, who through the usage of Creative arts e.g music, short films, art and digital art. As well as the research mentioned above, we have scrutiny meetings with senior officers, community meetings to ensure we are really representing the voices of our community. We deliver Know your rights training for young people.
The Account group is member-led, with a small group of young people deciding the goals, principles and workplan of the project.
Whilst still based in local community work in Hackney, the group is looking to expand over the next few years to become an independent national organisation.
To help us transition, please consider donating:
£20 can pay for one of our team members to deliver a workshop to a group of young people.
£100 can pay for two of our team members to go on a residential for reflection, healing and personal growth.
£500 can pay for an internship for a young person to work for two months on the project to learn key skills in advocacy, support.
£1000 can pay for 20 one-to-one therapy sessions for a young person who has been traumatised from encounters with the police.
