At Craftspace, we believe that creativity belongs to everyone and you can help us to secure access to craft experiences for all.
Who we are and what we do
This year, our charity Craftspace (no. 1001237) celebrates its 40th birthday. Across those forty years we have worked hard to create space for artists and communities to make, discover, and connect through craft.
And, we’ve had some great results! We’re proud to have supported over two-hundred-and-fifty thousand people to get making. We’ve commissioned work by two-and-a-half thousand artists and curated more than 500 exhibitions viewed by over two million people.
This is the power of craft.
Why we need your help
The Craftspace team are appealing for your help and support to secure our future.
We rely on donations to continue our work. Local government funding for arts and culture has decreased by almost half in England. The demand for funding from Trusts and Foundations that support arts & culture far exceeds potential grants available. So, we are crowdfunding to help sustain the impact of Craftspace for the next forty years and more.
Your donation could be matched £1.00 for £1.00 thanks to a generous supprter who has pledged to match the first £2500 that we raise.
We have rewards to offer inlcuding our new Workshop-in-a-Box craft activities - which we have developed to help us earn a new income stream to supoprt our work.
Everybody should have the opportunity to carve a piece of wood, to thread a needle, to weave fibres, to mould wet clay. Everybody should have the opportunity to craft. Can you remember who taught you a craft skill?
Hand-to-hand, craft crosses generations. This was once a certainty: we learned craft at school, from our parents, and through shared, local knowledge. Now, we must work hard to keep craft accessible.
Why craft matters
At Craftspace, we have seen that creating space for making has a positive impact that lasts a lifetime. We know that through understanding materials, developing skills, and creating physical things we can improve wellbeing, encourage shared knowledge, and increase curiosity – supporting individual confidence and social connection.
Beyond this, Craftspace empowers artists and curators. We make opportunities to showcase creativity and bring a curatorial vision to life through accessible exhibitions, workshops, and events.
Our growing network of artists and curators have lots to say about Craftspace and the work we do to support them: 90% agree that working on a project with us developed their confidence, thinking, and creative direction, as well as helping to expand their networks and raise their profile.
How you can get involved
By donating, your generosity will directly support artists and communities: helping Craftspace to bring more people together to explore, create, and discover through the shared experience of craft.
Your donation could buy materials, pay artists for their time, cover participants' travel costs, or fund workshops and support the activites in our workshop space that are free to take part in.
Our rewards
As a donor, you will be able to choose a reward. Perhaps you'll try a Workshop-in-a-Box and spark new ideas through weaving, paper, collage & stitch.
Each workshop-in-a-Box has been developed in collaboration with a professional artists, Clare Pentlow, Amber Lily & Sarah-May Johnson, sharing their knowledge for you to learn a hands-on skill and make something real. These activites can be done at home in your own time. Or maybe you'd like to join one of the artists at our workshop in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham so that you can learn in-person!
