Aim

A refill station in Cobham will allow the public to refill reusable water bottles with clean drinking water, and reduce single-use plastic

The CDRA (Cobham and Downside Residents' Association) has decided to support the installation of a water fountain in the centre of Cobham (in the pedestrianised section of Hollyhedge Road) as it will be of benefit to all residents and visitors.

We have applied for a grant from Elmbridge Borough Council to fund the project but we also rely on our community support to part-fund the installation costs.

According to the Environmental Audit Committee, consumption of single use bottled water doubled between 2005 and 2020 with an estimated 7 billion plastic water bottles used each year in the UK.  Around the world, one million plastic bottles are bought every minute. Along with an increase in consumption of other soft drinks, this means 13 billion plastic bottles are now used in the UK every year. These bottles do not just go away once they have been used: plastic bottles make up one third of all plastic pollution in the sea, and there are now over 159 plastic bottles for every mile of beach in the UK.

Increased development in the borough will only increase the strain on services in particular managing our waste. Installation of a water refill station at a prominent location in the heart of Cobham would help turn the dial on plastic waste and support a sustainable Elmbridge.
