An urgent meeting in Warsaw with artists and academics to develop training for trauma informed care specifically for children during war.
WHO ARE WE?
In 2023 a group of Ukrainian and British artists and academics started an online conversation to develop ideas of how to support Ukraine through collaborations with universities; to support Art Dot's Art Therapy Force and guided by Emeritus Professor of Music Nigel Osborne find a way to develop a training course for trauma informed care for Ukraine. Nigel teaching in Lviv.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?
After several online meetings we agreed to try and meet in person. Warsaw was the chosen city for safety and a sort of half way mark. Two academics from Kings College and Arts University London raised £5600 + support from Opera Circus to cover the costs.
We have now been asked to include a further 4 Academics from two further universities and we want to include an expert in trauma work (35 years in the NHS) and a trauma therapist and musician who has also worked with Nigel and Opera Circus for many years.
WHAT WE NEED TO RAISE AND WHY
So, we need to raise another £2000.
Some of the Ukrainian academics are travelling for over 30 hours by bus or train. We have offered extra nights at the hotel so they can rest both from the lengthy and uncomfortable travel, and the war. We want to provide good and plentiful food, warm working spaces and the technology required to present their reports. We will create an impromptu exhibition, a podcast and a full report, which we will share widely.
The British team come from Edinburgh, Newcastle, Brighton, Dorset, Birmingham and London. We are all travelling as economically as we can.
WHERE WILL IT LEAD?
This will be the start of a programme of work to develop a training course for a Creative Arts Trauma Informed Curriculum with an official qualification. We don't have time to train people fully in music or art therapy, it takes years, but we can develop this training using people's existing professional skills as musicians, artists, doctors, nurses, poets, actors, etc., to ensure that they can support those with trauma and are trained to care for them and to protect themselves when using the creative processes - in particular in the middle of war or conflict.
This meeting will also enable the development of collaborations between the universities, supporting the international standing and profile of the Ukrainian universities, which is being destroyed by war.
