Aim

A Town Explores a Book aims to help children enjoy literature and art in a fun, interactive way.

A Town Explores A Book is back for 2022!

Bigger and better each year since we started in 2017, this wonderful festival in St Leonards on Sea runs through the school spring holiday period providing a range of colourful, exciting ways in which our local children and families can be introduced to the joy of books. For 2022, our book is The Diddakoi by Rumer Godden.

Set in the local area (around Rye), the book's heroine is Kizzy, a girl of mixed-race Romany origins, who overcomes isolation and bullying to discover her own place in the world. It is an uplifting story that will enable children to explore the themes of friendship, diversity and being true to themselves.

We will be organising a whole range of workshops and activities in local schools and outdoor art in the open spaces of the town. These will be led by experienced artists and will encourage the children to make their own responses to the themes of the book, both visual and written. The workshops will provide free holiday activities for our local children, will give them a creative outlet and will be safe spaces where children will be able to express their own experiences and emotions.

Most of all, it will be FUN! St Leonards on Sea traders support us with fabulous window displays and café experiences. We make the most of the wonderful quirky character which makes St Leonards on Sea on the Sussex coast dear to our hearts.
