Why build a memorial?
17,000 Polish airmen fought in Allied air forces in World War, making crucial contributions including to the Battle of Britain and the Normandy Invasion.
Project Objectives:
To establish a permanent memorial to the serving personnel of the Polish Air Force that served from the B10 advanced landing ground in Plumetot, Normandy.
To enhance awareness and knowledge of the Polish Air Force’s contribution to the Allied War.
Why in Plumetot?
Memorials to the Polish Air Force exist in London and Warsaw, but there exists no dedicated memorial to the brave Polish airmen who took part in the Normandy Landings in France.
Just after the Invasion on 6th June 1944, a number of Advanced Landing Grounds were established in Normandy to support ground forces. Among these was “B 10” at PLUMETOT, operational from 10th June 1944 and which was, between August and September 1944 the base of operations for three squadrons of Polish combat aircraft: this marked the return of the Polish Air Force to the mainland of Europe. In order to commemorate this key event in the history of the Polish Air Force, PAFMC wish to erect a memorial in the commune of Plumetot in memory of the Polish airmen who flew from there ‘for your freedom and ours’. The project has the full support of the Maire and Commune of Plumetot!
As B10 represented the first Polish Air Force base in mainland Europe since the fall of France in 1940, it is therefore a particularly fitting place to erect a memorial to their contribution to the war effort.
Where will the Memorial be located?
The Memorial will be located in the centre of the village between the Mairie (Town Hall) and the local church. The commemorative sculpture will be erected on a plinth in a selected and maintained communal area. Groundworks will be carried out by the Plumetot commune.
It will serve as a focal point for the Plumetot community, relatives of veterans and for visitors to the region to commemorate the significant contribution to the liberation of Europe made by the Polish airmen that served at B10 aerodrome during the initial phase of the Battle of Normandy and elsewhere France and Western Europe to achieve the final victory.
You can make your contribution to their memory and ensure that their achievements are understood for future generations.
Any excess funds raised will be used by the committee to support the memory of Polish airmen at other sites.
WHO IS BEHIND THE PROJECT?
The project is a joint initiative between the Polish Air Force Memorial Committee, the Commune of Plumetot and the Polish Embassy in France. It all started with a letter from the Polish Air Force Memorial Committee to the Mayor of Plumetot in January 2017: 'What do you think of the idea to build a monument to Polish airmen in your town?'. Since then the project has developed rapidly as an international venture and we will unveil the monument on D-DAY75 (+3) on 9 June 2019.
ABOUT THE POLISH AIR FORCE MEMORIAL COMMITTEE
The Polish Air Force Memorial Committee was formed in 2010 with the aim of maintaining the memory of the Polish Air Force in the West, some 2,400 of whom gave their lives 'For Your Freedom and Ours' during the Second World War.
The Committee was set up by the Polish Air Force Association Charitable Trust. The new Committee was formed with the explicit agreement of the Commander in Chief of the Polish Air Force and of the Chief of the Air Staff for the Royal Air Force. The Committee is chaired by Mr Richard Kornicki and has sitting members from, and is supported by, both the Royal Air Force and Polish Embassy in the UK.

This project will see a dedicated memorial, specifically commissioned and designed to commemorate the achievements of the Polish Air Force in Normandy and the Battle of France installed in the Normandy village of Plumetot. There, in August 1944, three Polish fighter squadrons of 131 (Polish) Wing, 302, 308, and 317 Sqns landed at airfield B10. This marked the return to the mainland Europe for the first time since 1940, fighting 'for your freedom and ours' until the end of the war. The project was initiated by the Polish Air Force Committee in London under chairmen Richard Kornicki who is the son of the legendary pilot Franciszek Kornicki of the 303 Division.

The design is inspired by W. Churchills famous 'V for Victory' sign and evokes the contribution the Polish Air Force has made to Allied Victory in Normandy in 1944.

Who designed the Memorial?
Alexander Smaga Msc. Dipl.-Ing. Arch. is an Architect of polish origin who lives and works in Krakow, Vienna and London. This memorial encompasses a design which pays homage to the fight for Victory of the Allied Forces during WWII in which the Polish Air Force and Poland's Armed forces played a huge part.
What does the designer say about the Memorial?
The central architecture of the monument has been developed around a freestanding 'V' for 'Victory' sign. Bridging tradition and contemporary architectural sculpture design, the memorial combines computer generated geometry inspired by aircraft design and exclusively crafted cast metal elements. During the design process preference was given to the idea of a memorial that will recall the experience and exciting atmosphere surrounding airplanes and the art of flying.

W JĘZYKU POLSKIM
Tuż po inwazji na okupowaną przez III Rzeszę Francję, 6 czerwca 1944 r. w Normandii urządzono szereg wysuniętych lądowisk w celu wsparcia sił lądowych. Wśród nich znalazło się lotnisko "B10" w Plumetot, które działało od 10 czerwca 1944 r. Od sierpnia do września 1944 r. miejsce to było bazą, z której operowały trzy dywizjony polskich samolotów bojowych. To piękna mało znana karta polskiej historii. Plumetot był kamieniem milowy na drodze ku zwycięstwa aliantów.
To właśnie w związku z tym faktem, postanowiono upamiętnić to miejsce i zbudować pomnik, który uhonoruje polskich lotników. Pomnik stanie niedaleko plaży, na której lądowali Anglicy, blisko byłego pierwszego pasa startowego "B10" w centrum miasteczka Plumetot, 12 km od Caen.
Inicjatorzy budowy zakładają, że miejsce to będzie służyć jako punkt centralny dla społeczności Plumetot, krewnych weteranów oraz dla zwiedzających region. Przypomnijmy, że miejsca walk w Normandii co roku zwiedza kilka milionów osób.
Projekt autorstwa architekta Alexandra Smagi pod tytułem "Victory Fly Past Memorial" - "Zwycięski lot" wygrał dwuetapowy międzynarodowy konkurs na Pomnik Polskich Sił Powietrznych w Normandii. Pomnik ma być odsłonięty podczas uroczystości 75 rocznicy lądowania wojsk alianckich 9 czerwca 2019 r. w obecności władz, przedstawicieli wojsk alianckich i gości specjalnych. Rzeźba będzie miała kształt litery V jak "Victory" - "Wiktoria" i symbolizuje zwycięski lot lotników polskich. Projekt odzwierciedla udział trzech dywizjonów myśliwskich, 131 Skrzydła Myśliwskiego w bitwie o Normandię w czerwcu 1944 r.
Z materiałów konkursowych wynika, że budżet inwestycji wynosi do 40 tys. funtów. Kwota ta ma w pełni obejmować opłatę, wydatki, wszystkie koszty związane z tworzeniem i transportem pomnika, ubezpieczeniem i podatkiem VAT. Roboty ziemne i koszty instalacji zostaną pokryte przez gminę Plumetot.

Akcja ta zwana jako D-Day była największym w historii desantem, w którym wzięło udział 175 tysięcy żołnierzy, w tym prawie 7000 jednostek pływających i aż 11600 samolotów. Imperial War Museum w Duxford słynie z najbogatszej kolekcji latających samolotów z okresu II Wojny Światowej więc to właśnie oni byli gospodarzami dwu dniowych pokazów upamiętniających to wydarzenie.
