Penniwells RDA have been providing riding opportunities to people living with disability for over 30 years. We provide riding and stable management sessions for up to 140 riders a week of all ages and disabilities.
Our horse simulator Eddie plays a key role in supporting our riders. We would love to be able to create a larger space for Eddie, so we can increase the number of riders that can benefit from his services. Eddie is currently in a stable with very limited space and no wheelchair accessibility.
A bigger space means we will be able to erect a lifting hoist in Eddie’s new home. This will help give our more disabled riders the access they need to be able to mount and dismount Eddie.
Eddie's new home will give equestrian activity opportunities to a new group of riders who are not able to ride on our live horses, or to continue riding as their disabilities progress.
Rider's just like Clara;
CLARA'S STORY TOLD BY CLARA's MUM:
''Clara is an amazing resilient young lady who despite being visually impaired and in a wheelchair continues to ride weekly on her favourite horse Blue. Riding is her passion, and her love of horses is clear for all to see. In 2016 we as a family helped fundraise for Eddie, the mechanical horse, who provides all the benefits of riding but in a safer environment. For Clara to continue to benefit from the life changing activity that riding provides, she and many others need inclusive access to Eddie, the mechanical horse. In a bigger space a hoist can be installed which will give access to Clara, and so many other riders, enabling them to continue their dreams of riding despite the challenges they face in life''.
Eddie 'the horse simulator' helps our riders with;
- Improved balance
- Co-ordination motor skills
- Muscle strengthening
- Increased flexibility
- Positional work
- Emotional well-being
Our Riding for the Disabled (RDA) programme of riding experiences (via a screen) takes the riders across beaches, through forests and much more.
The simulator is a learning experience for all levels of riders from therapy, to honing riding skills, through to Paralympic competition level.
Improve National Coaching Standard
Eddie’s new bigger house will not only directly support our riders, but it will also help to develop coaches too! This means we’ll be able to run more training days for coaches and perspective coaches, in other nearby groups, developing their knowledge of biomechanics and working with an equine simulator. We regularly hold national training days for all types and levels of coaching, by having more space to work within we can improve our coaches learning experience and increase coaching standards nationally.
We need to raise in the region of £25,000 to make this project happen. Every penny raised will directly help in changing the lives of our incredible riders for the better and giving new equestrian activity opportunities to a whole new community of riders.
