Help Us Create a New Banner for Newquay Old Cornwall Society
For almost 100 years, the banner of Newquay Old Cornwall Society has proudly represented our Society at events, processions, church services, gatherings and celebrations across Newquay and Cornwall.
The story of the banner goes back to the earliest years of the Society. Newquay Old Cornwall Society was founded in December 1928, and by May 1929 the Society's minutes record discussions about obtaining a banner. In September 1930, arrangements were made to collect donations towards its cost, and the banner was subsequently made by the Royal School of Needlework in London
The original banner is a unique and important part of Newquay's heritage. Its design reflects the identity of the town and the traditions of the Old Cornwall movement, featuring the pilchard shield associated with Newquay, the Society's traditional green and yellow colours, and wording in the Cornish language.
The banner also carries the Society's name and motto in Unified Cornish, reflecting the importance of the Cornish language and cultural revival to the Old Cornwall movement.
For generations, the banner has accompanied members of Newquay Old Cornwall Society at processions, church services, civic occasions, Old Cornwall Society gatherings, heritage events and community celebrations.
Nearly 100 Years of Service
After almost a century of use, our treasured banner is now beginning to show its age. It has been repaired and carefully looked after over the years, but continued use is now taking its toll.
We believe that the time has come to retire the original banner from regular use and preserve it as an important piece of Newquay's heritage.
But we don't want its story to end there.
A new Banner
To ensure the future of the society we will recreate the banner that continues the tradition established by our predecessors almost a century ago.
Our committee and members have agreed that the new banner should remain faithful to the original design, including the historic wording in Unified Cornish. This will ensure that the new banner remains recognisable as the successor to the original, whilst allowing the historic banner itself to be preserved for future generations.
We hope to raise £1400 so a new banner will be made.
It will become a lasting symbol of our Society and our continuing work to preserve, research and promote the history and heritage of Newquay and the surrounding district.
A professionally made historic banner is a significant investment for a voluntary heritage organisation. We are therefore launching this Crowdfunder appeal to help raise the funds needed to commission the new banner.
Every contribution, however large or small, will help us bring this project to life.
Whether you have been involved with Newquay Old Cornwall Society for many years, have an interest in Newquay's history, love Cornwall's heritage and language, or simply want to support a local community organisation, we would be incredibly grateful for your support.
Please donate to our Crowdfunder and help us create a new banner that will continue this important tradition for generations to come.
Thank you for supporting Newquay Old Cornwall Society and helping us preserve and celebrate the heritage of Newquay.
