Aim

Support Andrew Cooper's campaign for West Yorkshire. Donate to help him get on the ballot paper and run a really effective campaign

On Thursday, 2nd May residents across West Yorkshire will go to the polls to elect their new mayor.

Right across West Yorkshire, the future demands a just transition to a green economy, to make our communities fairer, greener and more resilient. The region needs a Green Mayor at the helm, to deliver the change we need. You can’t rely on other candidates.

Mayoral campaigns are expensive. It costs £5,000 to pay our deposit to stand, and around another £3,000 to get our message out across the area in the official election booklet and through other communications. That's £8,000 overall.

A strong mayoral campaign also gives us a boost in local elections, helping to get more Greens into council chambers.

Can you help get Andrew on the ballot paper as our Green candidate for mayor? Donate to our fundraiser now!

Andrew says:

"I am a Kirklees Councillor, first elected for the Green Party in the Newsome Ward in 1999. I have been re-elected 6 times. I was the Green Party’s first West Yorkshire Mayoral Candidate in 2021 when we attracted 9.2% of the vote and 55,833 votes.

I have been a member of West Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Corporate Scrutiny Panel and the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel. For the last 3 years I have been a member of the West Yorkshire Climate, Energy and Environment Committee. In all these roles I have held the Mayor to account and appropriately challenged her on her policies and her pledges.

The Labour Mayor has failed to achieve her pledges on green jobs and sustainable homes. If selected I will contrast that with positive Green Party proposals to establish the Passivhaus standard for all new housing supported by Mayoral funds and a proper skills programme to install renewable technologies and to retrofit homes.

I am supportive of proposals to bring public transport under public control and to develop a West Yorkshire Tram Network. I would call for a moratorium on all new road building programmes supported by the current Mayor and call for a safe network of routes for cyclists.

As West Yorkshire Mayor I will make clear my support for an immediate permanent ceasefire in Gaza and promote boycotts, divestment and sanctions to put pressure on the Israeli Government to abide by International Law and end illegal occupations of Palestinian territory.

The Mayor also has responsibility for Police and Crime Policy in West Yorkshire and has a nominated Deputy. My nominated Deputy Mayor is Mothin Ali, our candidate in Gipton and Harehills in Leeds. He liaises with his local police over crime in his community and will be a great running mate if you select me as our Candidate."

Winning a fair deal for West Yorkshire

Andrew’s mayoral team will work across party lines, engaging with national government, councils across West Yorkshire and other agencies to bring forward projects that will improve our area. Winning our fair share of grants needs a first-class team that puts the interests of our area ahead of party politics.

Big decisions are needed to transform the West Yorkshire economy, and a Green Mayor will have the finances and power to deliver them.

  • Finance to ensure that every home can be warm, insulated and cheaper to heat
  • Public transport that is reliable, integrated, frequent and serves every community
  • Skills training and apprenticeships for the work needed to transform our economy - insulating homes, expanding renewable energy, manufacturing batteries, green construction
  • Support for every community to develop resilience and to prosper.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps us to our target. So please donate what you can and together we can people-power the Green campaign.

With your help, we can raise the money needed to run a campaign that ensures the Green message will be heard across West Yorkshire this May.

Please donate to our crowdfunder now!

P.S. Because we're a political party, we're required to run electoral register checks from people making donations above £500. If you donate over £1,500 during a year, we are required to let the Electoral Commission know, who will make this available on their website. All donations go to general campaigning funds.

Any donations not spent in this campaign will be used to fund future Green Party election campaigns across Yorkshire and the Humber region. By making a donation you confirm that you are eligible to make political donations in the UK, and that this donation is not made for or on behalf of any other person. All donations received are subject to the regulations of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.
