A Forest Garden for Criafolen

Aim

Using Pemaculture design principles, we are going to create a demonstration forest garden and perennial plant nursery.

We are a family of five with a One Planet Development smallholding in West Wales.

Our idea is to create a brand new forest garden, or food forest, which will demonstrate sustainable perennial food production in a soil building and habitat enriching system.

We will implement on 1 acre of our site the ideas of such forest garden pioneers as Robert Hart and Martin Crawford, also developing a plant nursery to increase availability of regionally suitable perennial food plants, and sharing our experience with visitors, volunteers and students, as well as writing about our results and making what we learn as widely available as possible.

Money that we raise will be used to buy a wide range of fruit trees and fruit bushes, along with perennial herbs, ground covers and nitrogen-fixing plants. We'll also source necessary planting materials, plant guards and tools for the work. In the course of establishing the forest garden we're going to equip a small plant nursery so that we can grow more plants for our site and share plants with other existing and new forest projects.

We know that present day agriculture will struggle to cope with rapid climate change; forest gardens both create stable food producing eco-systems to the benefit of people and wildlife and sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide. Our future is in the forest garden.
