Aim

I aim to record a debut EP. I've got a body of songs to refine and release as an EP, 'Playing Chess in the Clouds'.

I am delighted that this project will be supported by Crowdmatch if I receive 25 supporters. Creative Scotland will match every donation on a £1 to £1 basis, up to £250 per supporter. A huge thank you to Creative Scotland.

I am fundraising to record a debut EP. I've been writing songs for eighteen months and have a body of work which I want to hone and bring to life in an EP. ‘Playing Chess in the Clouds’ (working title) will explore power dynamics and small, serendipitous meetings that have a lasting effect. A lot of my writing is inspired by the place that I live, a working croft in the Highlands, and touches on the  connection between the earth, animal husbandry and the rhythms of the land with human experiences. Although a fledgling songwriter, since writing my first song during a wonderful immersive course, I feel compelled to live a life steeped in music. Aiming for a hint of Americana and much simplicity, I hope to create a little world to feel at home in.

I have worked in the arts in Scotland for over 18 years, at the beautiful Moniack Mhor. I fundraise and create writing development experiences for people from all walks of life. Contributing to an environment for writers to deepen their craft is such a privilege and wonderfully enrichening. Now, it feels like this is the right time to turn well needed attention to finding and developing my own voice through songs.  I have been so lucky to have met and been mentored by some brilliant singer/songwriters/producers which has really helped to create a vision for my work. Realising this debut EP would allow me to find my sound, create an identity as a songwriter, and bring it into the public realm. It would springboard me to make a larger sound for the songs by working with other musicians, put me on the road to delivering bigger and better performances and maybe allow me to give something back to the folk that I support in my job. It would deepen my understanding of what songwriters need and of the industry. I hope to make more meaningful opportunities for others through this personal process.

Bringing this little EP to life would include production of 3 songs and the following -

  • 2 or 3 days in a professional recording studio
  • Working with an experienced producer
  • Employing wonderful musicians/writers that I would love to collaborate with
  • Mixing and mastering

I have been a potter for over a decade now too, gathering inspiration from the croft where I live. Pottery fuels so much of what I do and having a table flowing with delicious stoneware pieces feels like a gentle celebration every day. I'd absolutely love to send you a pot in the post if you feel you can support this journey to become a singing potter!

Love Rachel x
