We're producing and publishing a 96 page A6 book that will guide you round Leiston, pointing out the many places with a Garretts connection.
Too many people drive through Leiston without stopping to explore the town's unique industrial heritage. Before Richard Garrett came here in 1778 Leiston was a small village. As the Works grew, so did the town. Many of the houses were built by the Garrett family. At the end of the 19th century, Garretts employed more than 2,000 men and exported to 75 countries. The Long Shop Museum tells the Garrett story, as well as displaying examples of the machines they made.
A grant from East Suffolk Council is enabling us to research, write and publish a 96 page A6 pocket guide to Leiston. The book will encourage visitors to walk round the town, discovering how Garretts success prompted the town's expansion.
Pledge your support and we will post you a copy of the book the moment it comes back from the printers. The book will launch at the Long Shop Museum on Sunday 2nd June. Later, copies will be on sale in bookshops, as well as at the museum. All profits from the sale of this book will go to fund the work of the Long Shop Museum.
