These are dangerous times.

Democracy is under attack from the authoritarian right. In countries like Russia and Hungary, the battle is already lost. In the US under President Trump, things look bleaker than ever. In France and Germany, the far-right will be challenging for power at the next elections. 

And just a few weeks ago, we saw the biggest ever far-right rally in London, egged on by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk. 

Now more than ever, we need to fight back to protect democracy in the UK. Please support us by backing our Crowdfunder today.

The warning signs are there for all to see.

The public's faith in politics is at a historic low. We witnessed serious democratic backsliding under the last Government and, so far, the new Government has been reluctant to turn things around. 

Past promises to restore the independence of the Electoral Commission, to clean up politics and reform the House of Lords have fallen flat.

We face yet more threats to our right to peaceful protest and a mandatory Digital ID scheme that would be a dangerous tool in the hands of a future authoritarian government.

The next year is crucial to turning this around. It starts with the Government’s Elections Bill which is set to be published soon…

We know that it will contain crucial wins for Unlock Democracy such as Votes at 16 and Automatic Voter Registration. 

But it needs to go much, much further. That’s where your help comes in! 

This Bill could transform the future of British politics, but only if we push hard for the right changes.

With your help, we want the Elections Bill to:

• Restore the independence of the Electoral Commission - allowing it to carry out its vital role of ensuring our elections are free and fair, without political interference.
• Bring in a political donation cap - stop billionaires like Elon Musk from buying influence in our politics.
• Change our voting system - Polls show that our next Government could be elected with a majority with just 28% of the vote - First Past the Post voting doesn’t work in this era of multi-party politics. 

These are vital fights and your support is crucial.

• Build our movement - by growing our activist base and making the movement for democracy impossible to ignore.
• Support our campaigners - our fantastic team has years of experience in campaigning, engaging with the press, digital advertising, and fundraising.

What your support has already achieved

Our generous supporters helped us raise over £37,000 for our last Crowdfunder. This helped power our campaigns and got us some key wins: 

• Automatic voter registration is now government policy, which will make it easier for millions of people to vote. We held a successful parliamentary drop-in session and kept the pressure on Ministers  all year round.
• The government acknowledged that First Past the Post is broken and reintroduced a fairer system for electing Mayors.
• We developed our links with the political parties. Our team attended four party conferences this autumn, bringing our message to parties across the political spectrum.
• We’ve grown our movement. We’ve gained thousands of new supporters and reached over three million people online.

Together, we’ve already moved the dial. 

But there’s still much more to do, and we need your help to make it possible.
