Aim

Our aim is to recreate the old Southwold Railway, which closed in 1929, so that local residents can experience the thrills of steam railways

We are a small team of 8 volunteer Trustees plus around 12 regular volunteers, mostly retired. We purchased a piece of land in Southwold, near to the original trackbed, in 2017 which gave us a base to work from, this we call Steamworks. It was the old gas works so the site had to be cleared, decontaminated and made secure. Since then we have a permanent miniature railway which enables us to give rides and generate income. We have built a station, engine shed and laid 80m of track. We have two containers one being our welfare for volunteers and the other for model railway layouts, books/DVD shop and our gift shop. The station has a café which is very popular on our open days. We have obtained two items of rolling stock from other railways, a rusty loco and a dilapidated carriage, bot in need of major restoration. We have built ourselves two replica trucks and we have had built a replica steam loco. Our next aim is to have built a replica passenger carriage so we can offer rides and gain more income for future projects.
