About the project
The project team of "Community Health First - Nepal" operates in the predominantly mountainous area of Makwanpur, which borders Kathmandu to the south and southwest. Since the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday 25th April, relief response has been slow and villagers from remote communities are struggling, feeling isolated and scared. Distribution that has begun comprises basic plastic sheeting, dried foods, bottled water and salt. Although medical attention and basic supplies have been provided in some places, is not reaching the most isolated communities nor is it sufficient to meet the demands of the immediate and long-term medical services that impacted communities need to rebuild.
Community Health First - Nepal recognises that the window of opportunity is closing to support the most vulnerable people, including pregnant women, infants and older people, who are and will become more affected by losses suffered as a result of the earthquake. Their core team of 12, along with 7 volunteers, are leading an initiative to refit a few critical remote health posts to treat survivors in villages farther removed and in need of support. The health posts are simple constructions built with the intention to provide the first point of access for very remote communities to receive health services. The posts are currently not fit for use as they are not well staffed or equipped.
We are coordinating with the local Department of Health to staff the health posts but with the help of your funding we aim to breathe new life into this system by refitting the facilities and buying necessary supplies so it can properly meet the needs of surrounding mountain and hillside communities. Your contributions will also help us expand our reach to areas in critical need as we gear up to provide a triage and ambulance service for the nearest outlying villages to these health posts. Based in tents and sensitive to the needs of women and girls, this triage service will be our frontline where initial consultations and referrals can be made.
We have already committed funding to project management, including non-volunteer staff salaries, and admin costs, so 100% of your contribution will go to sustaining this operation, providing added security in the months ahead to villages as they recover from this disaster.
The health posts and outreach services provide us with the best option to treat people who are injured or in poor health and are becoming increasingly borderline as the rainy season sets in. The first batch of medical supplies are already on their way (a contribution from Thailand). But we urgently need more, including non-medical supplies such as blankets, cookers and fuel, lanterns and batteries, etc. Please donate.
