Create new opportunities for women and young people to participate in hockey through Mums & Minis and improved junior facilities, equipment

Who are we?

Cookstown Hockey Club has been at the heart of our local community for 75 years.

From generations of families playing together to welcoming people taking their first steps into hockey, our club has always been about more than the sport itself. It is a place where people meet, make friends, develop confidence and feel part of something.

As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we want to look forward as much as we look back. Our vision is to create new opportunities for the next generation and make it easier for more people to get involved in hockey.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We want our 75th anniversary to leave a lasting legacy.

We are crowdfunding to create two new participation opportunities within Cookstown Hockey Club.

Mums & Minis will be a new 6-week programme for mothers who are new to hockey or returning to the sport, with their children aged 4–6 able to take part alongside them. The programme will provide coaching and the equipment needed to make participation accessible and enjoyable.

Our Junior Hockey Development strand will focus on young people aged 11–18. We want to create more opportunities for juniors to play, develop their skills and experience different positions through small-sided hockey.

Funding will help us provide new small-sided goals, training equipment, hockey balls, mannequins and four complete junior goalkeeper equipment sets. Having four goalkeeper sets will allow goalkeeping opportunities to run across multiple small-sided pitches rather than limiting participation to one young goalkeeper at a time.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Every pound raised will go towards creating these new opportunities.

The money raised will fund the six-week Mums & Minis programme, including coaching and specialist equipment, alongside new junior hockey equipment including small-sided goals, training equipment, hockey balls and four complete goalkeeper sets to increase opportunities for young people aged 11–18 to participate and develop their skills. We will also invest in our volunteers, with £1,150 supporting Fundamentals, Level 1 and specialist GK coaching development. This will strengthen the people delivering hockey at Cookstown and help us create more opportunities for young players to participate, develop and stay involved in the club.   We are aiming to raise at £8000, with help from Sport NI.

Community impact

This project will create opportunities for people who may not currently participate in hockey.

For mothers, Mums & Minis provides a welcoming route into hockey without having to choose between taking part and looking after young children.

For young people aged 11–18, the junior development programme will provide more opportunities to play, practise and try different positions. The new equipment will allow small-sided hockey to be delivered across multiple areas of the pitch, increasing active participation.

Most importantly, the equipment and programmes will create a lasting benefit for Cookstown Hockey Club, helping us continue to introduce new people to hockey long after our 75th anniversary celebrations are over.
