Aim

Win a one-of-a-kind framed A3 print by acclaimed photographer Sandra George, in aid of the Community Wellbeing Space!

The Prize

To celebrate the summer exhibition "Start From the Level" at the City Art Centre, an exploration of the life, work, and archive of Sandra George, our friends at Craigmillar Now and the Sandra George estate are kindly donating this original, never publicly seen before print worth £600.00 - which could be YOURS for only £5.00!

Every entry directly supports our fundraising to save the Community Wellbeing Collective's radical space in Wester Hailes. Through our grassroots work, we keep Sandra George’s legacy alive by building equality, anti-racism, community empowerment, and creative arts access programmes.

In partnership with Craigmillar Now, the City Art Centre, and Tyler George Hewitt, we are grateful to offer this incredible prize to ONE LUCKY WINNER! The image depicts a young child playing in a phone box in Wester Hailes in 1989, capturing the rebellious, resourceful, and resilient spirit of Edinburgh's working class communities in the 1980s and 1990s.

Sandra George was a talented and prolific social documentary photographer and a well-respected community worker from Edinburgh who devoted her life to working with communities, documenting and developing vital social-action projects in Edinburgh for over thirty years. She worked extensively as a freelance photographer for over 30 years, and taught photography and other arts skills to people of all ages in communities across Edinburgh. She started working in community development in Wester Hailes in the 1980s, and in Craigmillar from the 1990s, and was an integral member of notable Edinburgh social support and arts organisations, as well as the founder of many successful social action projects. She administered outstanding programmes of youth arts engagement, and her main belief was in community education, empowering others through new experiences in the arts. Across her career, she captured thousands of photographs documenting the social history of Edinburgh, Scotland, and the UK at large.

The legacy she has left is a first-hand social history through her distinctive lens. Start from the Level includes over 200 photographs, showcasing George’s powerful and empowering archive. Her work has previously been featured in the Baltic Gallery, Stills Gallery, the Travelling Gallery, and as part of the Glasgow International Festival 2024.

The Cause

The Community Wellbeing Collective is a grassroots group of people living in or connected to Wester Hailes. Together we operate a unique community space with over 500 visitors a month, and run free accessible activities including yoga, mindfulness meditation, creative writing, arts workshops, weekly nutritious hot meals and much more - alongside being a free public sober space to take respite, enjoy a cup of tea, and just be.

Wester Hailes is a working class area of disproportionate poverty which affects mental and physical health. We create a space that is truly run by the community for the community, where the skills of our lived experience can be shared, which is diverse and combats isolation, and where we can imagine and create new ways of being and healing together.

Our space is at risk of CLOSURE, and we need to raise £15,400 by the end of July to stay open! We're on the way - but we need your help!

What Your Entry Will Support

Your generosity will ensure that our space continues to provide:

  • Our Restbite Cafe: A free sober space with free hot meals for all!
  • Free Wellbeing activities: Run by local members who know what our community needs. From yoga to language support to Women's and Men's Social Groups to creative arts workshops to mindfulness and meditation, we offer a wide range of activities that support mental health and wellbeing for all ages.
  • Monthly Radical Anchor Events: on all the big themes that affect our wellbeing from housing to social care, mental health and suicide, to prison and economic systems... we bring our imaginations and our action towards change!
  • Staff Costs: A fair pay for our team of passionate activity leaders, hosts and core roles that make it all happen. Your donation will help us keep them paid, ensuring continuity and care for all participants.
  • Operational Costs: This includes the running costs of our venue, such as space maintenance, utilities, rent, and essential resources

All proceeds will go to the CWC.

CWC will also host a free exploration of George's archive, featuring original negatives, photographs, personal items, and workshop followed by a shared community meal, as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival's 2026 programme on 15th August 2026. Be welcome!
