Aim

To raise funds for local mental health organisation Sunrise Cornwall CIC by riding 60 miles on Penny Farthings ~ in memory Edmond Stanbury.

Hi my name is Lee. On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July 2026, myself and friends will be taking on a unique cycling challenge: Ed's Ride ~ a 60-mile Penny Farthing ride around stunning Cornwall.

We are a small group of riders looking to raise money for Sunrise Cornwall CIC, who offer free safe and supportive events, workshops and activities based on music, art and wellbeing, for adults affected by suicide.  We are taking on this challenge in memory of my brother Ed Stanbury, who we lost to suicide in October 2025.

Ed was an extremely creative artist and musician, and was well-known for his beautiful sand art.

Being creative helped Ed to cope with his anxiety and mental health issues, which he had suffered from for most of his life. He was full of empathy, compassion, kindness, generosity, unselfishness and humour, but tragically his chronic anxiety took over his life like a 'monster'.

We want to support Sunrise Cornwall CIC who are doing excellent work to support those who have lost a loved one to suicide, aiming to reduce the ripple effect. This challenge will help us to do something positive and keep fighting the 'monster' of mental health issues.

ED'S RIDE

We are setting off and finishing in the beautiful seaside town of St Ives, this is a journey with heart and heritage. A painful 60 mile all round ride.

Mounted atop a classic Penny Farthing, made in the 1800’s we will navigate winding coastal roads and rolling Cornish countryside.

This ride isn’t just about distance — it’s about reconnecting with a traditional form of cycling and embracing adventure and along the way raising awareness of suicide and mental health in Cornwall.1769610832_ed_stanbury_13.jpg

The route will take me through charming villages, past historic harbours, and along scenic lanes only a few get to experience.

Riding a Penny Farthing adds an extra layer of challenge, requiring balance, focus, and old-school skill that will test our bodies to the max.

July timing means warm weather, summer sunshine, and a lively community atmosphere cheering every pedal stroke.

Setting off from St Ives at dawn, we aim to complete the full circle back by sunset. Rest and repeat, so 30 miles per day.

Every mile will be a celebration of perseverance, passion, and the joy of cycling in its classic form. We are hopefully raising awareness and monies to support Sunrise Cornwall CIC, and the work they do across Cornwall.

Friends, fellow riders, and supporters are invited to follow the adventure and meet at key points on the route.

Whether you’re a cyclist, history lover, or Cornwall fan, this Penny Farthing journey promises something special.

Come July 2026, St Ives will witness the start and triumphant return of a ride that blends tradition, terrain, and tenacity.
