Aim
Now in our 150th year, we begin a £35k appeal for a new roof to protect our historic Lodge - every donation helps secure the next 150 years.
Raise the Roof - Securing the Future of Duke of Cornwall Lodge No. 1529
In 2025, the Duke of Cornwall Lodge No. 1529 will proudly celebrate its 150th Anniversary in the historic market town of St. Columb Major, Cornwall. Established in 1875 at the Red Lion Hotel, our Lodge has served as a hub of fellowship, charity, and tradition for generations of local people - from farmers and mariners to schoolteachers and craftsmen.
In 1877, we purchased and converted a former chapel on Victoria Street into our permanent Masonic home. This beautiful and historically rich Temple still contains many original furnishings, including an ornate Master’s chair, a unique frieze depicting the 33 degrees of Freemasonry, and traditional wooden pillars - all maintained with care and reverence.
Our building has stood the test of time, but age has caught up with it. In 2023, we replaced the severely cracked lath and plaster ceiling, damaged by extreme heat, at a cost of £9,500. This followed an earlier boiler replacement in 2018, costing £8,260. These essential repairs have depleted our reserves - and now, we urgently need to replace the Temple roof to preserve the integrity of the building for the next generation. The total cost of the roof project is £35,000.
But this is more than just a building - it’s a fundraising hub. Not only does our Lodge give back, but Freemasons across the UK are among the largest charitable givers, donating millions each year. In 2024, Duke of Cornwall Lodge alone raised £5,000 for Cornwall Hospice Care, and in 2025 we’re set to raise another £5,000 for two worthy local charities.
And we’re not alone. Five other Lodges meet in this building, each contributing in their own way to good causes across Cornwall.
