Breaking the cycle of poverty by supporting parents in taking the next steps in becoming financially educated, resilient and independent.

OUR AIMS
Wolverhampton Baby Bank is dedicated to providing emergency support including immediate access to free nappies, baby food, clothing, nappies, toiletries, equipment and other critical items to families with infants and young children who are experiencing financial hardship in our local communities. With this project, we are not just giving out nappies & essentials. We are determined to break the cycle of poverty by supporting parents in taking the next steps in becoming financially educated, resilient and independent.
WHO ARE WE AND WHAT IS OUR PROJECT ABOUT
Wolverhampton Baby Bank was set up in October 2020 by the Women & Families Resource Centre (a registered charity based in Wolverhampton). This project is rooted in the firm belief of creating a safety net which ensures that no child goes without basic necessities and essentials. By providing practical support suchl as mattresses, cots, prams, nappies, and other baby essentials, we help reduce the financial strain on families who may otherwise be forced into debt or hardship to cover these costs.
Our organisation has served families in Wolverhampton for over 16 years, providing critical support through our baby bank, befriending, counselling services and family-centred wraparound care. We work directly with families living in extreme poverty, often referred to us in moments of deep crisis. We also signpost families to local services for budgeting, benefits, and financial planning, giving them tools to manage money more effectively. By easing financial pressure, parents gain confidence, children have safe essentials, and families can plan for the future, creating stronger, more independent households and healthier communities across Wolverhampton.
Families in Wolverhampton are not just facing poverty. These figures translate into real challenges: parents going without meals to feed their children, babies without safe sleeping spaces, and families unable to afford baby essentials. The additional costs to households with a new baby (especially those requiring neonatal care), including electricity & water bills, travel for hospital appointments, baby food and essentials, can be a serious burden on families.
“The baby bank helped me out so much when I was in need. I was in financial hardship, in between jobs, with no help from my daughter’s father. This is such a great organization! Thank you so much!!”
(Sara, Service User)
We have experienced a huge demand for the baby bank service, and our waiting lists have become extensive with many families desperate for essential items. The families coming through the doors of Wolverhampton Baby Bank are not only experiencing material poverty, but they are also experiencing loneliness, social isolation, anxiety and shame. Many of the families we support through our existing befriending & counselling services are parents of young children, including single parents, young mums, and families struggling with low income, debt, or temporary unemployment. To bridge this gap, we need funding to purchase new, safe items, particularly where second-hand donations are unsuitable or unavailable. This means families can depend on us to meet their needs reliably, giving them peace of mind, reducing financial stress, and enabling them to focus on building more secure, independent futures.
WHY ARE WE CROWDFUNDING
Our project supports Financial Wellbeing and Resilience, through our three integrated wrap around support programmes for baby bank clients:
1. Budgeting support through our Community Baby Boutique. The membership model is itself a budgeting tool, with monthly budgeting conversations between members and the Boutique coordinator that help families plan three months ahead and stretch limited budgets across a child's life-stages.
2. Money management through direct cash-equivalent financial relief at the Baby Bank, where every starter bundle is worth £75–£150 a family doesn't have to find that week.
3. Financial education through structured money-worry conversations, printed welcome packs at both entry points, four Family Financial Wellbeing workshops with Citizens Advice, and the Savvy Mums Community which runs monthly Meet-the-Professional events and a moderated WhatsApp peer-support group.
4. Debt management information & signposting support through formal warm-referral pathways into Citizens Advice Wolverhampton, the council's Welfare Rights Service, and partner debt-advice charities and through hands-on volunteer support at the Savvy Mums monthly drop-ins and mum circles. Volunteers will run benefits checks, build new-baby budgeting plans, fill in forms with members, and make advocacy calls to utility companies and debt-management providers on members' behalf.
During the financial period 1st April 2025-31st March 2026, we distributed over 6223 baby essentials and equipment to over 486 families in need across Wolverhampton. This represents a 64.82% increase in demand from the previous year.
This funding will help us take a holistic approach in our support offer to parents and service users at the baby bank in taking the next steps of becoming more financially resilient and independent, reducing the immediate pressure of crisis and creating a foundation for a more secure future. We are determined to break the cycle of poverty for families by providing a long term and sustainable initiative which helps ease the pressures and effects of the cost-of-living crisis on families with children aged 0-3yrs.
By supporting the Baby Bank, you’re not just providing a temporary fix, you’re offering hope, stability, and a lifeline to families in need. With your help, we will ensure that parents no longer have to choose between feeding their child and keeping their home warm. Together, we can ensure that all children in our community, regardless of their circumstances, have access to the essentials they need to thrive.
