200 Mile Sunrise-Sunset Cycle Challenge for Stevo

Aim

To raise precious funds and awareness for Tom Stevenson in his courageous battle against Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

A small group of us have decided to take on a Sunrise-Sunset 200 mile cycling challenge on June 18th. We will be cycling the whole distance within one day. This is something none of us have attempted before and it will provide a unique challenge of both fitness and mental strength. However, this is nothing compared to the challenges that face our friend Tom Stevenson who, for the last 9 years, has faced daily challenges which would have broken the spirit of most people. 

This last year has seen Tom face some of his biggest challenges. He's been hospitalised 5 times over 12 months, had pneumonia on 5 occasions, collapsed lungs - 3 times, respiratory failure and 5 blood infections. He was taken into hospital on Christmas Eve and only last week was released after fighting through these latest battles. Tom is a very special human being, his courage, heart and spirit make him an inspiration for all those that know him.

For those that don’t know Tom, he was an extremely healthy fun loving lad who played at a high standard of football, as well as pretty much everything else he turned his hand to! 9 years ago after complaining of strange twitches in his thumb for a few months, he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Also known as ALS, it is the disease that Professor Stephen Hawking suffered. 

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is an extremely rare, uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves. It causes weakness that gradually get worse over time and stops the body from functioning properly. At present, there is no cure for MND, but there are treatments to help reduce the impact it has on a person's daily life. 

Unfortunately, the last 2 years have had a significant impact on Tom's life. Both his Family Fun Day and Battlefund Golf Event had to be cancelled. These events usually help raise over one year’s supply of medical costs which can amount to £2,000 per month.

This funding will help to bridge the gap caused by these events being cancelled, providing Tom access to alternative treatments not currently available on the NHS, pay for costly travel arrangements for any treatment or therapy available outside of the UK and where necessary help to improve the quality of life for Tom through his journey with his diagnosis.

Tom continues to defy the Doctors original prognosis and pushes the boundaries.
