Welcome to my 100-mug challenge!

Hello! I am Hazel, a potter near Edinburgh.  Over the next 100 days I’ll be creating 100 hand-thrown mugs to raise funds for an exciting new development: replacing my old pottery studio hut.

My current little hut has seen many Scottish winters. It’s charming, but after years of wind, rain, and mice it has become rather dilapidated and no longer fit for purpose. To continue making pottery—and to grow what I do—I need a studio that can properly stand up to the Scottish elements.

So I’ve set myself a challenge.

I’ll be making 100 beautiful mugs, each one carefully thrown by hand and offered here as rewards for supporting the project.

The 100-Mug Challenge

Among potters the 100-mug challenge is well known creative challenge.

For a beginner, reaching 100 is a huge milestone.

For a seasoned professional, throwing 100 vessels in a day is a big deal.

Some potters aim to make 100 completely different mugs, others aim for 100 perfectly matching pieces. Every potter approaches it a little differently.

For me, the challenge is to create 100 matching mugs over the coming months—each one consistent, elegant, and made with care.

The Mug Design

Over the past few months I’ve been testing prototypes and refining both the form and glaze.

The final design has been carefully developed to balance beauty, comfort in the hand, and everyday usefulness. A mug should feel just right when you hold it—whether it’s for morning coffee, afternoon tea, or a cosy evening drink.

I truly hope you’ll love the finished pieces as much as I’ve loved creating them.

Follow the Journey

Join me on the journey! I will making videos of each stage of the process and posting regularly on social media. You can follow me here:

The new Studio

I’m currently in the process of applying for planning permission for a new studio space, and the hope is that it will look something like the design shown here.

The new studio won’t just give me a better place to work—it will also be large enough to welcome others! My aim is to teach pottery as well as make it, and share the joy of working with clay with more people. This new space would make that possible.
